What you will get:Reflections on making a difference
Thousands of starfish…
Washed up on the beach. Destined to die.
And as the walker marched past them, thinking to himself how nature had it’s own way of doing things, he noticed a young boy.
The boy was tirelessly picking up the starfish, one by one, and returning them to the sea.
Intent on sharing some common sense with the young boy, the walker went over to him and stated…
“My dear child. There are thousands upon thousands of starfish stranded on this beach. You can’t possibly hope to make a difference by throwing a few back in the sea.”
And then…
The young boy paused for a moment as he thought carefully about the walker’s words. He looked down at the starfish in his hand, before placing it back into the sea.
“You said I can’t make a difference,” said the young boy, “But I just made a difference to that one.”
You see…
When faced with the enormity of the problems in the world (according to the news each day!), it sometimes may seem that you can’t make a difference. So what’s the point in trying?
But you can.
Whether you are the successful entrepreneur who wants to revolutionise healthcare to the masses.
Or the humble street cleaner who wants to make your area a more pleasant place for people to enjoy.
Your possibilities for making a difference are endless.
And what’s more…
Each time you make a difference to others, you make a difference to yourself.
Genuine acts of giving and kindness trigger a release of happy hormones in your brain. In other words, the more you make a positive difference to others, the more you make a positive difference to yourself.
So have you stopped to recognise the positive difference you can and will make to others today?
And what could you do even more of to make an even bigger difference?
Offer to help a friend in need?
Remember to tell your partner how much you love him/her?
Look the homeless person in the eyes and give her the money for a fresh cup of coffee?
Research from neuroscience tells us you are hard-wired for empathy and giving. Your brain is designed to give you emotional reward when you are kind to others.
So why fight thousands of year’s of brain development?
I’m off to notice when I make a difference today and plan how I can do that more and more.
How about you?
To your fulfilment.
Steve
