What are You Chasing

What you will get: To stop and think about what you want from life.

What are you chasing?

And will you be happy when you catch it?

There’s no doubt…

We’re living in a world where it’s easier and faster than ever to get “stuff”. (Amazon Prime means next day, right?)

The new watch?
The new tablet? (not the Viagra type of tablet – but that too if you want it!)
The new dress?

In fact, we can get the new ”I don’t really need this at all but I’m going to buy it because I can” accessory more easily than ever before in the history of mankind.

Here’s my one simple question.

WHY?

What does it give us?

Well, according to research by Richard Layard, it does give us a temporary happiness fix. So when we get the new “thing” our dopamine levels rise and it feels good…
Until we want a newer, better one.

And that’s the problem with the spreading addiction of just getting stuff. It gives a quick fix. But just like any form of addiction – we soon need bigger and better to get the same level of fix.

And you and I know…

That’s a path to guaranteed misery.

Picture the scene…

You are on your death bed (don’t panic, you are at least 105!). You are asked the question, “What mattered most in your life?”

What would your answer be?

“My finest hour was the day I got the new Apple watch?”

“I’ll never forget when I worked extra hours every day for 3 months so I could get a bigger car.”

“Definitely, the day I remember most was when I bought the Mont Blanc pen so I could sign my name with status.”

I don’t think so!

My bet is…

…that the things that matter most to you are things like,

People.
Love.
Sharing.
Laughing until your stomach hurts.
Caring.
Giving.

And as the old cliché goes…

“Money can’t buy you love”
(Or any of the other things on the list above)

So back to my original question…

“What are you chasing?”

You see…

As the famous author and leadership trainer Robin Sharma puts it,

“You can pursue shiny distractions. Or you can do epic work. You just don’t get to do both.”

And by epic work, he means things that will really make a difference. Things that you will look back on with pride when reflecting back on your life.

I’m off to chase what really counts, how about you?

How about you?

To your success
