What you will get: Reflections on the power of “maybe”

The “Maybe” Farmer

…is a story we can all gain some wisdom from.

Once upon a time…

There lived a farmer who owned a sizeable stretch of land.

And one day, just by chance, a team of wild horses strayed onto his land and became the property of the farmer.

“That was a big stroke of luck!” stated his friends.

“Maybe,” replied the farmer.

And the farmer’s 20 year-old son, took it upon himself to train the wild horses.

And indeed the training was progressing well, until one day one of the horses kicked out wildly and broke the farmer’s son’s leg.

“That was mighty unlucky!” proclaimed those close by.

“Maybe,” replied the farmer.

And 1 week later, the farmer’s troubled country found itself at war with a neighbouring land.

And a letter arrived at the farmer’s house calling on his beloved son to come and fight for his country.

But of course he couldn’t, because he had a broken leg.

Wow, that is so lucky!” announced the farmer’s brother.

“Maybe,” replied the farmer.

And so ends (and starts) the story.

You see…

Far too often, people jump to conclusions and label something as good or bad, right or wrong, lucky or unlucky.

Where is truth, most things are never all good or all bad.

There are surprise opportunities that arise in seemingly dark times.
And what seems too good to be true often is.

So there is wisdom in learning to be comfortable with “maybe.”

Ask yourself:

What can I learn from this apparent failure?
What’s the good side of apparent bad luck?
Where’s the good in this missed opportunity?

And remember never to get too complacent when things seem to be perfect.

I’m off to be comfortable with uncertainty and never see anything as only good or bad. Maybe.

How about you?

To your fulfillment.
