The HOPE of Change

What you will get: The HOPE of Change

I wanted my money back!

For years I had been playing golf at a reasonable level (my opinion, so open for discussion).

And then I had a professional golf lesson.
And I was told to change my grip.

So I did.
My golf got worse.

And I wanted my money back.

But I persevered.
I stuck at it.
I kept trying.

And eventually….

I started to get better.
And better.
And better.

And after just 1 month, my golf game was better than before I went and had the lesson.

So what’s the learning here?

With most change situations, things get harder, more taxing and often worse before they get better.

You see…

Even if they are bad ones, your limbic system has programmed in habits so it takes little or no effort or thought to do them.

So, you just…

….drive a car without thinking about how to drive.
…make a coffee without working out how to use your coffee machine.
…tie your shoe laces without wondering how.

And that’s just great, for good habits.

But for bad habits that we want to change, we often have to use extra energy, focus, willpower and thinking in order to make the change last and beneficial

Just like I did when changing to a new, unfamiliar golf grip.

This change process can be summarized in the change model of HOPE.

And what does HOPE stand for?

At first change can be Hard.
And the effort you have to put in can Overtax your energy and mind.
But then, you start to make Progress.
Until eventually, the new habit is Effortless.

So you see…

There is HOPE.

And as long as you set realistic expectations about change, not just expecting some kind of overnight miracle, then changing habits is really possible.

So, want to be fitter? You can.
Want more financial freedom? You can.
Want less stress in your life? You can.
Want more choice? You can.
Want more self belief? You can.

Just remember, you are likely to encounter the 4 steps of HOPE in the process of change.

But with…

Time,
Energy.
Focus.
Willpower.
Determination.

Then lasting change is yours.

I’m off to create some new beneficial habits for myself, whilst being realistic about the steps I will go through to get there.

How about you?

To your success.
